Day 1 Games and Day 2 Predictions

Day 1 Games:

Bishop Montgomery 77 St Joseph’s 28

Justin Cobbs had only 11 points and 4 assists but the Knights spread the scoring around evenly and really laid off the throttle after jumping out to a 29-4 1st quarter lead. Montgomery sharpshooter Mike Panaggio led all scorers with 16 points.

Mission Prep 65 Los Osos 60

In a very big upset, the host Royals who were down by 4 with 3 minutes to go came back to win by 5. After being tied at 35 at halftime, Mission’s Jerry Casey and Robbie Souza worked the inside-outside game in the second half. Casey finished with 20 and Souza, who put the game out of reach with a corner 3 ball with 20 seconds left, finished with 21 points. Kendall Williams, one of the nation’s top junior PG and already committed to UCLA, was very impressive in defeat, tallying 27 points with many of them coming on contested jumpers. Frankly, he was one of the most aggressive scorers I have seen play at the tournament. Many top stars play too passively, but Williams was aggressive in getting his shots, penetrating, passing, and even playing defense.

Day 2 Predictions:

Disclaimer for all predictions: The views expressed in this blog does not necessarily represent the opinions of the directors of the MPCC.

Los Osos 75 Mission Hills 61

Mission Hills always plays hard but after losing all 5 starters from last years squad, it is tough to foresee them beating an athletic, high scoring Los Osos team. Kendall Williams continues to shoot the lights out of the ball with 28 points.

Bishop Montgomery 70 LACES 48

I haven’t seen this LACES team in two years but I do know they lack size. I expect both teams to run and push the ball, but I expect Montgomery to be slightly better shooters and have a dominant size advantage. Just a gut feeling.

Sylmar 80 St. Joseph’s 39

A senior-laden Sylmar squad should prove to be bigger, faster, and stronger than St. Joseph’s. If the Knights can stay in it early, then they have a fighting chance because they are a high energy team but I expect UCLA-bound forward Tyler Honeycutt to take this game over. Likely the most dynamic player on the floor, will score from inside and outside, I expect him to go for 25+ points.

Campbell Hall 71 Campolindo 47

The Vikings return this year led by bigs Keegan Hornbuckle (Colorado) and Deuce Johnson, that alone on the inside will be enough to overpower Campolindo, with its first year coach Matt Watson, who has no player over 6’4”. But the Vikings also have sophomore playmaker and budding star Austin McBroom not only to help dish the ball to Hornbuckle and Johnson but to put up plenty of points.
