Tournament Analysis

Austin McBroom is special. He has amazing speed, quickness, great moves, and court vision. A bit of a funky jumper, but easily the team leader as a sophomore. Keegan Hornbuckle hasn’t impressed me but Deuce Johnson has looked good when he isn’t in foul trouble.

Kendall Williams may be the best shooter I’ve seen at this tournament….ever. He mans up and hits all the shots his team needs, but he and his coach need to get on the same page. A true scorer with a scorer’s mentality.

Justin Cobbs has a team full of incredible athletes. They all run and jump well. He looked good as a leader, doing whatever it takes, including hitting some big buckets driving in the paint.

Taft has incredible team speed. They are very well coached and able to anticipate on defense. Hawkins has looked like the most well-rounded player at the tourney, a very cerebral player. Michael Williams is money from deep. Terran Carter is menacing in the paint.

Ramon Eaton and Darius Nelson have all kinds of potential for Sheldon, and we’ll see more of them in the next two days. I was impressed with how that whole team just went after Taft.

Tony Freeland is a solid forward for Fremont and he should do well at DePaul….but he needs to work on his free-throw shooting. Kyle Odister is strong with ball and has a nice jumper but nothing spectacular so far. He teams lacks a real inside presence so we’ll see how he does.

Josh Smith looked disinterested… a tad heavy… not explosive… on a bad team… but still could go anywhere in the country. Must be nice to be 6’10, with hands the size of tennis rackets.

Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, and Yes it must be nice.

Hopefully we’ll see more of him soon, what team are you supporting?

It’s really too bad that the vast majority of the referees here on the Central Coast are so bad.

they aren’t used to doing games with SPEED and ATHLETICISM,
and they let their egos take over most of the time

there are a few good ones though… not enough to count on more than one hand though

The refs are horrible. They are inconsistent and repeatedly fail to get into good position. If they’re not working for free, its a rip off.

There are like 3 good referees. That’s about it, the rest either try to take over the game or are blown away and lose control.

Bad referees seem to be the norm these days in high school basketball. The state CIF really needs to address the issue.
It’s just as bad in SoCal and even worse with LA City refs.
