Day 1 Preview

Day 1 Projections

Game 1: Pioneer Valley 32 vs. Edison 71

Pioneer Valley will likely have a tough time stopping Edison’s front court duo of Steven McClellan and Robert Upshaw. Look for the Tigers to dominate the game in the paint.

Game 2: Mission Prep vs. Cathedral

N/A – Conflict of Interest

Game 3: Birmingham 47 vs. Washington Prep 55

Birmingham loses a lot from last year’s squad. Washington Prep returns 3 starters, led by JB Walker and Earnest Cooper, and should pull ahead in this game.

Game 4: San Luis Obispo 47 vs Sylmar 52

Local school SLO looks to take on a big D1 school in Sylmar. Although SLO did graduate a lot of talented seniors, including County POY Julian Demalleville, I think they have a shot in this game. Sylmar loses nearly every player off of last year’s squad and I don’t know too much about them, but I’ll give them the edge.

Game 5: Campolindo 48 vs. Pasadena 61

This game will be determined by the Kellen Ito (Campolindo) versus Steven Adams (Pasadena) matchup. I think Adams will win that and Pasadena will win the game.

Game 6: St. Joseph’s 34 vs. Ballou 76

The founder of the Christmas Classic, Tom Mott, returns to Mission Prep, but this time as the St. Joseph coach. Ballou has climbed rankings early on after some big wins and is now rated as the #1 school in the DC area. I think St. Joe’s will struggle to stop Donte Thomas and Zalmico Harmon on the perimeter.

Game 7: Eldorado 64 vs. Taft 72

Taft currently sits at 22nd in the nation in the ESPN RISE rankings. Eldorado is a very tough, athletic, and deep team led by Curtis Stewart. They love to play fast. This game will be closer than people anticipate, but too much DeAndre Daniels and Bryce Jones in the end as Taft pulls it out.

Game 8: Mission Prep vs Campbell Hall

N/A – Conflict of Interest

Once again, this is all just my thoughts and opinions and isn’t reflective of the thoughts and opinions of the Christmas Classic Tournament committee.

6 for 6 on the day. Well played. Now here are my projections for day 2 for your critique and response:

    Edison V. Pasadena
a close matchup in the paint but Edison’s talent will be too much for Pasadena’s athleticism.
    Edison wins 58 – 51
    Ballou V. Washington Prep
Despite tremendous guard play, Washington Prep will fall short against Ballou’s experience.
    Ballou, 68 – 59
Sylmar V. Campbell Hall no explanation needed here, Campbell Hall rolls easily 65 – 49.
    Taft V. Cathedral
The size is there for Cathedral, however enough talent to beat Taft is not. Taft wins 56 – 48.
    Birmingham V. Campo
Birmingham’s tempo is too much for Campo’s methodical style.
    Birmingham in a close one, 52 – 49
St. Joseph V. SLO High Mott seems to have his kids fired up and ready to compete with anyone. St. Joe’s takes care of SLO 55 – 50.
Pioneer Valley V. Eldorado not the greatest showing by this Vegas team against Taft but losing to Pioneer Valley isn’t in my crystal ball. Eldorado wins big, 60 – 38.
    Mission Prep V. Rio Americano
Rio Americano comes in as the only team not to play on challenge night. But are their fresh legs enough for their 7 man roster to beat MP? The Royals turn up the intensity in this one and advance to the semifinals, 52 – 45.
