Birmingham 67 Campolindo 61

Guards Renee Reyes and Corey Randall piloted Birmingham with 18 points a piece in the victory.  Adam Mancebo led Campolindo with 21 points in the loss, as forward Kellen Ito was held to just 9 points. Birmingham advances to the Elite Division Semifinals. Campolindo goes into the consolation bracket.

Eldorado 33 Pioneer Valley 20

This low-scoring affair played out much differently than I anticipated. Ariel Bagget led a well-balanced SunDevil attack in the victory, with 9 points. Anthony Zepeda was the Panthers’ high scorer in the loss with 11 points. Eldorado advances to the Elite Division Semifinals. The Panthers head to the consolation bracket after losing a game that was neck and neck until the last few minutes.

Pasadena 61 Edison 42

Well, Edison’s Steven McClellan did not play due to injury. Robert Upshaw saw time in the 1st half but was limited. Same story for Pasadena’s Steven Adams, but he saw even less time. Edison started 2 freshman in TJ Viney and Aaron Williams, and 2 sophomores in Jordan Batts and the aforementioned Robert Upshaw. It showed at times as they struggled with turnovers. Pasadena, led by Tyler Barber with 12 points, played more composed throughout and that was the difference in the game. Senior Jereol Walker Jr. was Edison high scorer in the loss with 18 points.

Ballou 69 Washington Prep 66

This game was most exciting of the tournament so far, a true battle throughout. Both teams displayed well-balanced offense. Ballou had four scorers in double digits led by Donte Thomas with 17 points and Christian Leach with 14 points. Thomas made a driving layup in traffic as the shot clock expired on Ballou’s final possession to essentially seal the win. Washington Prep used incredible team speed and energy to keep the pressure on throughout. Guard Michaelyn Scott once again put on a show with the ball in his hands, consistently splitting double teams and hitting floaters in the lane. Forward JB Walker had a game-high 22 points in the loss.

Campbell Hall 57 Sylmar 54

Campbell Hall was down 17 points late in the third quarter, but then finally got hot from field en route to a big comeback victory over the Sylmar Spartans. Top performers were the usual suspects Austin McBroom (25 points) and Deuce Johnson (9 points, 12 rebounds). Sylmar, led by tough play from forward Alex Moreno with 16 points, played well for the majority of the contest but broke down late.

St. Joseph 55 SLO High 51

St. Joe’s pulled off a 55-51 victory over area rival SLO High in the 4:30 game this afternoon. The Knights held on to a very slim lead throughout the contest as they defeated the Tigers in this last minute thriller. The tight score and electric energy provided by the crowd and players made this a fun one to watch. Nolan Adlesh led St. Joe’s with 15 points while Sean Mullen had 12 for SLO in the loss.

Rio Americano 59 Mission Prep 46

After trailing 12-8 at the end of the 1st quarter, Rio Americano caught fire from the field and took over. Guards Abe Leibovitz and Zach Nathanson both shot well from deep and handled the ball for the Raiders. Mission Prep was led by Sam Cowitz and Billy Sukoski in defeat.

Taft 86 Cathedral 47

Cathedral just couldn’t hang with the powerhouse Taft Toreadors in this one sided finale to Saturday’s game action. The Phantoms kept it close for the first quarter, but Taft pulled away in the 2nd and never looked back, winning with their signature up-tempo offense and intense defense. Frankie Eteuti led the Phantoms for the second straight game, scoring 21. USC signee Bryce Jones had 18 pacing a non-stop scoring attack for the Toreadors.

Taft’s Bryce Jones won the dunk contest, tonight, with an all-around spectacular showing.
